Two Men Cheat Death in Car Accident

October 12, 2009

Harbison Canyon - Two men sustained injuries when their cars swerved which resulted to slashing out a fire hydrant and knocking down a power pole, narrowly escaping electrocution.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer Brian Pennings said the 1986 Toyota Supra was being driven by one of the two men when it lost control and flipped over.

The road was flooded with water and live power lines were strewn across the car and the ground. Cal Fire Capt. Daryll Pina said that the two men got out of the car alive and were found sitting on the road. “How they did not get electrocuted I don't know,” Pina said.

It was hard for the firemen to cut off the water because the live wires were dangerous. Firefighters were unable to get the water shut-off valve close because of the live wires. It took 45 minutes for the San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) crew to arrive to fix it.

SDG&E crew were able to reconnect the power to an estimated 167 customers in Dehesa, Alpine, Harbison Canyon, Rancho Palo Verde and Glen Oaks in the afternoon. CHP said both men were brought to a hospital nearby.
