CAR ACCIDENT: Teenagers Trapped When Car Overturned and Crashed Into Utility Pole

January 26, 2011

Spring Valley – At least two teenagers were injured and trapped inside their car when it overturned and slammed into a power pole Wednesday night, authorities said.

The crash happened around 10 am near 900 block of Gillespie Drive, north of Jamacha Boulevard. Roshawn Broadnax, 19, was driving his father’s silver Corvette southbound at an estimated 90 mph when he hit a dip around St. George Street, lost control of the car, went airborne, and rolled several times, California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings said.

The vehicle then slammed into a utility pole on the passenger side. It got cut off due to impact and knocked the car on its driver’s side, Leonard Villarreal, spokesman for the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District said.

The power lines of the pole sagged down while gasoline spilled from the car, creating a dangerous situation. Residents tried to help the victims, and some also called 911, but was unable to rescue the trapped men. Firefighters who came at the scene pried apart the wreckage to free Broadnax and his 18-year-old passenger. They were taken to Mercy Hospital but suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A spokesman from the Sheriff’s department said both men were not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the crash happened. No charges have been filed but the driver would be cited for driving at an unsafe speed.

The road was closed for several hours as San Diego Gas & Electric replaced the broken pole, a utility company spokeswoman said.
