SUV ROLLOVER: Suspected drunk driver crashes SUV, Injures passenger

June 8, 2010

Thousand Palms – Authorities have found a sport utility vehicle on its roof along Varner Road, just west of Cook Street and near Interstate 10, Tuesday morning.

According to CHP Officer Ramon Perez, the crash was reported at 5:15 a.m. The 1997 Ford SUV may have swerved off the nearby freeway, staggered through a fence, and tumbled onto Varner Road.

Riverside County deputies found the SUV blocking traffic on the freeway but no one was inside of it. However, authorities saw the driver, Adam Swaim, 26, not far away from the wreckage.

Swaim, a Desert Hot Springs native, tried to flee the scene along with his passenger, a 20-year-old woman. The passenger was sent to the hospital for moderate injuries, while Swaim was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

He is also wanted for felony narcotics and was booked into the Indio Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.
