VEHICLE COLLISION: Sedan Runs Over a Stop Sign in Berkeley, Collides with Officer’s Car

February 12, 2011

Berkeley – A motorist and a police officer suffered injuries after the officer crashed onto a car which also ran a stop sign early Saturday, authorities said.

Hodges Akilki, 201, was traveling west in a Honda Sedan on Fairview Street around 2 am when he failed to yield to a stop sign and ended up hitting it, California Highway Patrol Spokesman Sam Morgan said. Officer Stephanie Polizziani, 30, who was driving north on Sacramento Street then collided with the car.

Morgan said that Polizziani had the right of way in the intersection since she did not have a stop sign. Akilki therefore violated both the right-of-way and the stop sign.

Both officer and driver sustained minor abrasions and complained of pain. Akilki’s passenger, Omar Rhem, 22, was also left injured. Acting Berkeley police Lt. Mike Dougherty said Polizziani may or may not miss a few days of work. The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
