Heavy Snow Results Traffic Accident in Interstate 80
March 16, 2011
Donner Summit - Emergency crews were forced to close the Interstate 80 due to traffic accidents on snow that covered the roads near Donner Summit at around 9a.m. The condition of the motorist and passengers involved in the accident are unknown.
The California Highway Patrol is cautioning anyone heading into the Sierra to be prepared for possible delays due to weather.
In the afternoon, the roadway has been cleared and traffic has been back to normal and the chain restrictions on Interstate 80 were dropped. However, Highway Patrol officer Todd Kettwig said "I would recommend that those heading to Tahoe for the weekend, if they can, leave as early as possible because of the forecast of more snow on Friday."
For now, Sierra ski resorts, like Alpine Meadows and Sugar Bowl, are reporting between 22"-28" of new snow within 24 hours.
Farther south, Heavenly is reporting 18" of new snow.
