September 16, 2010
Azusa – A drunk driver who died in a car crash on 210 Freeway early Thursday was apparently scheduled to attend a court-mandated DUI education class, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Lidia Kopach, 24, was hurrying home to get some sleep as preparation for the class later that day after a night of drinking with a friend. Around 2:00 am, her white sedan rolled over on the eastbound lane of the freeway, west of Azusa Avenue.
Passenger Daniel Martinez, 24, said that they were in a bar in Monrovia earlier. They shared two pitchers of beer in addition to two Red-Bull vodkas that Kopach had, CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said.
Prior to the accident, Martinez had asked Kopach to slow down. The car was reportedly running more than 100 mph. Martinez suffered minor injuries.
Kopach was previously convicted of drunk driving by a West Covina Superior Court, according to court records.
