CAR CRASH: Big Bear City Resident Killed as Car Crashes on Sugarloaf Garage
August 11, 2010
Sugarloaf – A Big Bear City resident died after crashing into a garage and getting trapped inside his overturned car Wednesday morning, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.
Police said Casey Steven Vargo, 40, was driving a 2009 Pontiac G6 on Highway 38 at 1:20 a.m. when after passing Zaca Road and entering a right curve, his vehicle began to skid and crossed the double yellow lines.
It slid back to the right then ran a metal post marker and a trash bin on the side of the road. The vehicle went up in the air and crashed into a garage in the 300 block before overturning.
A parked 1994 Toyota truck was slightly damaged because of the accident. Officers arrived at the scene with Vargo still stuck inside the car. He later died at the scene. Another occupant of the car, James Passmoore, 41, suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital.
Officers said both had seatbelts on when the crash happened. However, the CHP reported that Vargo was speeding before it occurred.
